Crinum asiaticum

This lovely crinum lily lives at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami, FL. It’s a double lily day! These are also called Spider Lilies.

These plants can get fairly large with leaves that can be 3′ long. The leaves clump together and grow in rosette forms to create a full base. The flowers though can get so heavy that they collapse under their own weight if not supported properly. The entire plant can easily grow to 5′ tall. Um, I’m still taller though – just to keep the record straight.

These flowers are native to tropical southeastern Asia but are now fairly common throughout Florida. The plant is pretty hardy and grows well in full sun and well drained soil. In the right climate it flowers regularly and the blooms smell wonderful.

Bustin’ out my mom side, I feel like I should warn everyone: Do Not Eat. The crinum lily is poisonous and even the sap has been known to cause skin irritations.
