Xylocopa virginica

The bee above was hanging out on some Goldenrod in the Raulston Arboretum. Looks like she made friend with a Leatherwing Beetle. The last one is totally nom nomming all sloppy like in some pollenicious goldenrod.

Big, Hairy & Awesome!

Two Baby Hoppers

I don’t have much to say about these, other than +awwww+.

Last summer, just a few months after we moved into our house, the lilies by the porch were overtaken with hundreds of teeny tiny little green hoppers for a day. I have no idea what species they are, but since the weather has been in the 80’s and the bulbs are up and the pear tree is blooming – I’m getting excited for Spring and little bug babies = Spring time awesomeness.

:)

Happy warm-weather-to-come, everyone!

Buddleia and Moth

Buddleia and Moth

Buddleja davidii

This particular bush is called Buddleia (Buddleja and Buddleia are both used, the latter being the more common term) “Attraction” and is the type that is closest to having red flowers. This lovely specimen, along with the battered moth pal, were photographed at the Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC.

More on the Butterfly Bush!

Top = Shell Ginger Flower = Alpinia zerumbet

Bottom = Red Ginger Flower = Alpinia purpurata

Neither of these are the same plant we regularly use for belly aches, but the flowers are awesome. These photos were both taken at Pinecrest Park in S. Miami very early one summer morning. The angle of the sun and the sticky/suffocating/wet humid air made for some lovely lighting effects.

I also have the sneaking suspicion that my earlier “soft serve” cone flowers also belong to the ginger family due to the stacked nature and growth patterns of the flowers…

Mmmm…. ginger….

Tarnished Plant Bug

Lygus lineolaris

I only snapped one shot of this super small tarnished plant bug hanging out on a wild snapdragon in my yard, so I sort of forgot about him until I was going through photos. But, what a good looking true bug indeed!

I guess I have a soft spot for the really nasty bugs!
